REGULAR WALKS
1st and 3rd Mondays starting at 10.30 from the TESCO Dorchester Fountains
2nd and 4th Mondays at 10.30 starting from Age Concern, 4 Prince of Wales R oad, Dorchester
5th Mondays at 10.30 starting from the Diabetes Centre, 50 Bridport Road
(Well behaved dogs may come on this walk!)
Every Tuesday starting at 14.30 leaving from beside the Corn Exchange, North Square, Dorchester.
On Mondays and Tuesdays we aim to have at least 2 groups walking at different rates, the faster groups walk for about an hour and the slower groups for ½ - ¾ hour. The longer walks will sometimes include grass/muddy paths so please wear shoes comfortable and appropriate for you to walk in. The shoes also need to be suitable for if the weather is wet and bring a raincoat if it looks like rain. Most of us stop for refreshments after the walk as well.
On the Thursday evening walks and Sunday walks there is the possibility of a few stiles and steeper gradients. Sensible walking shoes are necessary. Well-behaved dogs may be brought on the out of town walks. We aim for the pace of the walk to be what ever suits you best. There will be a leader at the front setting a moderate pace and a leader at the back going at the pace which suits the slowest walker. They will have First Aid packs and mobile phones for emerge ncies. The route and any hazards will be discussed at the beginning of the walk.
If you are attending a walk for the first time you will be asked to fill out a confidential health questionnaire.
We hope walkers will be able to stop for refreshments at the end of the walk. It is, of course, optional but having a chat is a great way to get to know people. We also take part in various other activities such as the Carnival Procession, Dorset Arts Weeks etc.
For people who want to walk independently in town but are not sure where to go, there are the Dorchester Town Trails which tell you about the exciting history of the town. Maps and information available from Tourist Information (on the corner of Antelope Walk and Trinity Street).
For people who want more challenging walks we have a leaflet with information about the local Ramblers groups. Please request from one of the walk leaders or contact Mary Foskett on 01305 264955.
Or Iris Warne on 01305 871430
The disclaimer for the Ramblers reads as follows
“All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise the potential for an accident to arise”
The walk leaders feel this applies to THE DORCHESTER STROLLERS activities too and so would like to bring it to your attention.
For other nearby Walking the Way to Health Groups contact Alan Burfield 01305 835637 for Weymouth and Portland and Tony Hawthorne 01308 458966 for Bridport.
The County Council is also a source of information and booklets.
