The Dorchester Strollers was formed in June 2003 and at that time was called the Walking the Way to Health Group, Dorchester. The aim of the Group is “to get more people walking to improve their health” and among the five objectives are -:
- Improve the health of local people through a programme of organised walks and events
- Maintain links with health and leisure professionals
- To get more people walking independently.
Before being allowed to lead for the Group, the leaders undertake a day’s training including risk assessment of routes.
Membership of the Group is open to anyone from Dorchester and the surrounding area and there are members from Bridport, Puddletown, Cattistock, Charminster, Sutton Poyntz and Weymouth to name a few.
There are two regular walks sessions each week - on Mondays - first and third of the month from Tesco Dorchester by the fountains: second and fourth Mondays from Age Concern, 4 Prince of Wales Road and the fifth Monday from the Diabetes Centre, Bridport Road all at 10.30 am: every Tuesday afternoon at 2.15 pm from the car park at the back of the Corn Exchange. Also on some Thursday afternoons at 2.15 pm from the Brownsword Hall, Poundbury.
On each occasion there are two sessions - a slower walk lasting half an hour and a faster walk of an hour. The pace is adjusted to suit those participating. We all then meet afterwards for a cup of coffee or tea.
There is no need to book, just turn up ten minutes before the start time. Anyone new is asked to complete a health form.
In the summer there are occasional short evening walks and also an occasional Sunday afternoon walk from somewhere not too far from Dorchester but there is then the possibility of a few stiles and steeper gradients. Dogs are only allowed on the out of town walks and from the Diabetes Centre.
The Strollers now have their own display boards which are used wherever and whenever possible. They provide a useful aid to the talks we give to groups to encourage walking.
The Dorchester Strollers invites you to come along and join us.
