The Portland Gateway consists of two Portland Stone pillars. Beneath the left-hand pillar is a time capsule containing many contemporary artifacts including a copy of this web site on CD. The Portland Gateway was intended to be erected nearer to Ferrybridge where Portland joins the rest of the world. This was to be a celebration of the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 2002. Unfortunately, problems over location delayed the completion but, two years late, it is now erected adjacent to Victoria Square as vehicles enter the roundabout system. This was site of a railway station in the first half of the 20th century.

The following three photographs were kindly supplied by Ken Howes who is the Information Officer for the Provincial Grand Lodge of Dorset. The local Freemasons raised a considerable amount of money to support the erection of the Gateway. These pictures show the formal deposition of the time capsule into the foundation and laying of the foundation stone on Sunday 9th May 2004.

A copy of this web site is in the polycarbonate box.

On Saturday 12th June 2004 Sandra and I were invited to the official opening of the Gateway by the Portland Town Mayor, Councillor Steven Flew. The following pictures show the cutting of the ribbon, the assembled party of Mayors and Guests as well as some general pictures of the Gateway.

The Addresses by the Town Mayor's Chaplain, Reverend Anita Thorne.

Portland Town Mayor, Councillor Steven Flew, and Weymouth Mayor, Councillor Doug Hollings.

Sandra and I pose by one column of the Gateway dressed in our best attire - not our usual clothes for exploring Portland! I tried to photograph all eight faces of the bases which tell the story of Portland but the lettering was too faint and was not legible on my pictures.
