MARIE STOPES ON PORTLAND

Marie Stopes lived on Portland in the Higher Lighthouse from 1923 and bought Avice’s Cottage to convert to the Portland Museum which she opened in 1930. Click here for details of her life and work.

WITH LT PETER NORTON . NORTON WAS A NAVAL OFFICER STATIONED AT PORTLAND. HE RENTED THE LIGHTHOUSE WITH TWO OTHERS. NORTON WAS A DRAMATIST, ROSE WAS A POET SERVING IN HMS COSSACK.  THE SINKING IF THIS SHIP INSPIRED HIM TO WRITE 'INSTEAD OF TEARS' PUBLISHED IN WARTIME HARVEST 1944. MARGOT FONTEYN VISITED THESE OFFICERS DURING THE WAR.
