This area covers the main community of Weston. This includes the Royal Exchange pub, a finely restored Late Tudor house and a strange derelict building. Please click here for a detailed map. There are many old pictures of Weston here. Elsewhere we have seen the animosity between 'Tophillers' and 'Underhillers'. Well, there is animosity between the communities on Tophill. In 2007 I heard a resident of Easton saying of a resident of Weston that was in trouble with the police "Well! That's no more than I expect from a Westonite!" |
| OLD COTTAGES | |
This cottage, along with Portland Museum, are the last thatched cottages left on Portland.
It lies in Gypsy Lane which is a cul-de-sac off Weston Street opposite the Royal Exchange pub. Please click here for a very old picture of this cottage. |

Garage Door Art |
A decorated garage door in Weston photographed in 1989 - but now replaced by a plain white door. I claim to have started this fashion when I painted my garage door in Radipole Lane in 1974. Many others then appeared throughout Weymouth and Portland. Some other doors are shown below including some of mine from my Weymouth house. |
Here are two unusual garage door paintings from off Portland. The left-hand one is at Southill, Weymouth and the right-hand is in Sutton Poyntz. |
This decorated door was between Easton Square and the site of the old station back in 1989. Now - like all the other decorated garage doors of the 1980s - replaced with boring plain paint. |

WESTON SHOPS AND HOUSES |
Some small and somewhat specialised shops still survive on Portland although many shops have closed over the past 20 years. Thompson's is almost opposite the Royal Exchange pub and underwent an extension in the summer of 2003. |

AN ABANDONED FARM BUILDING |
This derelict building stands near the junction of Weston Street with Avalanche Road. There is something fascinating about abandoned houses - who owns it? Why is it being left to fall down? Will it ever be renovated? Comparing the above pictures from 1990 (left) and 2007 (right) show that some work has been done to stabilise the structure. |
There is little left of the ancient walls to this building - a just a few large stone blocks precariously balanced on each other. That rusting old rotavator won't be up to the job of clearing this abandoned garden! |
