Today we walked from Mertola for about 8 miles in rather hot conditions taking in the Convent outside Mertola - click here for details. |
Soon after leaving Mertola we found this remarkable tree. Huge quantities of sap were oozing from it and forming large sticky globules. The tree had been burned a few years previously. |
These pictures show the enormous power of floods that have roared through the hills and ravines around Mertola. |
Wherever you go in the world there is always a rubbish dump to be found! |
A welcome and cooling well where we pumped up water to help get us onto the second part of the walk. |

On the outskirts of Mertola we visited an old convent that has been restored by a Dutch family and turned into an art exhibition and workshop - click here. The following pictures show a small part of the exhibits that we saw. Most exhibits consist of animated stork skeletons and skulls. The first two pictures show a mechanical donkey illustrating how water was originally drawn from the convent's well. Please click here to download and play an 8 MB movie of the donkey walking. This may take a while before it starts to play. There is a sound track. |

The picture at left shows a toy rabbit that played a drum to entice a bird skeleton to drop from the ceiling. Great fun! |
